« Thanks for the invitation. I am very pleased to be here as I discovered make.org and the work of the french and German groups in Lille, in France and I was very impressed by the methods. So I really want to congratulate you and to say that I think that there is a very sophisticated method. With my group « Renew Europe », we have decided to make a task force, a Youth Task Force and I would dream to have a partnership with you not because you speak about Agora, but because as you said, when you have lots of participants, you have the method. I was really impressed by that.
Secondly, I really share with you the idea that we are going thru dangerous times with populism growing in some of our countries and that in history we see that totalitarianism can emerge when you have a great number of people who are indifferent, not engaged, and a little number determined people who want to attack and destroy democracy.
And then, thankfully, we have also this minorities engaged but the engagement of society is the best antidote against totalitarianism. What you’ve been describing is a political fonction and what we are doing now is absolutely crucial. I also wanted to say that I often meet young people and what I observe is that you are a very engaged generation and you have suffered during the pandemic, it’s obvious. The good news for you, is that we are likely to have six more months in order to do more for you. So it will be, a year and a half, maybe two years. You have suffered, but you don’t like victimisation, you want the means to act and you want to be heard, to participate. For me, this is very striking. I wanted to say, of course we have to do much more, I think that’s the conference for the future of Europe which is a huge event, so thank you for all what you’ve done, but it’s only the beginning. It’s a new way of writing politics. It’s not just an event, a communication to say that you participate, that there is some conclusion with 49 proposals. It was very clear at the conclusion of the cession that it’s a new way of writing politics together. This is for me a beginning, a very important beginning. We don’t start from ground zero. Ce que vous décrivez est une fonction politique et ce que nous faisons maintenant est absolument crucial. Je voulais aussi dire que je rencontre souvent des jeunes et ce que j’observe, c’est que vous êtes une génération très engagée et que vous avez souffert pendant la pandémie, c’est évident. La bonne nouvelle pour vous, c’est que nous aurons probablement six mois de plus pour en faire plus pour vous, alors ce sera, un an et demi, peut-être deux ans. Vous avez souffert, mais vous n’aimez pas la victimisation, vous voulez les moyens d’agir et vous voulez être entendus, participer. Pour moi, c’est très frappant. Je voulais dire, bien sûr que nous devons faire beaucoup plus, je pense que c’est la conférence pour l’avenir de l’Europe qui est un événement énorme, alors merci pour tout ce que vous avez fait, mais ce n’est que le début. C’est une nouvelle façon d’écrire la politique. Ce n’est pas seulement un événement, une communication pour dire que vous participez, qu’il y a une conclusion avec 49 propositions. Il était très clair à la fin de la cession que c’était une nouvelle façon d’écrire la politique ensemble. C’est pour moi un début, un début très important. Nous ne partons pas de zéro. Les jeunes ont été entendus. »
